The Family and Social Services Administration's (FSSA) Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), along with the Indiana Addictions Issues Coalition (IAIC), the Indiana Department of Correction, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will sponsor the 2008 Recovery Ride tomorrow, Saturday, September 27. Participants will take a symbolic victory lap around I-465 in honor of the thousands of Hoosiers in long-term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
"We are excited to be sponsoring the 2008 Recovery Ride which celebrates those who are in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction," said DMHA Director Cathy Boggs. "We hope this event will serve to encourage those who may be starting down their own road to recovery and to ensure them that it is possible to achieve real recovery."
Governor Mitch Daniels declared by executive order that September 2008 is the Indiana Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, in conjunction with the national Recovery Month. This September marks the 19th year that communities across the country have joined together to help people recognize that substance use disorders are treatable. In the past year, 22.6 million people nationally and approximately 640,000 Hoosiers were classified with a serious substance use disorder.
Recovery Ride 2008 will begin on Government Place in downtown Indianapolis. The motorcycle ride will begin at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the west steps of the Indiana Statehouse (entered via West Street). Pre-registration is available at www.recoveryindiana.org. Free t-shirts will be available to anyone who registers online, and while supply lasts at the Recovery Ride on Saturday.
