Q: What kind of help is available to me after the disaster?

A: There are two types of help:

  1. FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides money and direct services to those affected by a major disaster. Requirements must be met to qualify for help from this program.
  2. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) provides low-interest loans for damage to property owned by homeowners, renters, businesses and private non-profit organizations that are not fully covered by insurance.

Q: I have been “denied” by FEMA. What do I do now?

A: This does not mean you have been denied for assistance, but merely referred to the Small Business Administration to apply for an SBA loan. You must file an SBA loan application if you desire assistance from FEMA. If granted the loan, you can always choose to decline it. To apply with the SBA call 1-800-488-5223 to find the SBA office nearest you or visit any a center on the following list: SBA centers. Applications must be filed by November 24, 2008.

Q: I’m not sure if I want to take out an SBA loan.

A: You can apply for an SBA loan, but if qualified you are not required to take the loan. It is important that you at least begin the process by November 24, 2008. From there, you can decide if a loan is right for you.

Q: I didn’t qualify for an SBA loan, now what can I do?

A: You can work with FEMA for other needs assistance (ONA), such as medical and dental needs, disaster related funeral and burial costs, clothing, educational materials, heating fuels, clean up items, disaster damaged vehicle, moving and storage expenses related to disaster. Call FEMA's toll-free number 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired.

Q: I don’t have insurance. Can I still apply for housing assistance?

A: Yes. You do not need insurance to apply for FEMA assistance. FEMA’s Individuals and Housing Program provides money and services to people in the disaster area when losses are not covered by insurance and property has been damaged or destroyed.

Q: My house is flooded and I have no place to live. What do I do?

A: The State and FEMA are doing everything they can to help individuals affected by the disaster to rehabilitate their homes and to find temporary housing. First, you apply for FEMA assistance. To register, call FEMA's toll-free number 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired.

Q: How do I get medical assistance?

A: FEMA is helping individuals who have been affected by the flooding find medical assistance. Call 1-877-788-5888 or visit http://www.ihie.com/indianaflood/
