New Federal Extension Prompts Next-Day Payment Guarantee of 5:00 p.m.
Due to the increased number of claims generated by the latest federal extension, next-day deposits on eligible claims without unresolved issues are now guaranteed by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time the next business day. Claimants are encouraged to utilize the mobile notification feature which will call or e-mail you when your deposit has been completed. Filing Information for New Federal Unemployment Extension
The federal government enacted an up to 20 week extension of benefits on November 6. Any Hoosier who has previously exhausted either of the first two federal extensions of unemployment or state extended benefits and remains unemployed may be eligible to receive this new federal extension. Hoosiers currently collecting unemployment will be directed to this new extension automatically.
Unemployed Hoosiers who have previously exhausted their benefits can file for this extension as follows:
- Beginning Monday, November 23, 2009 - reopen unemployment claim through Uplink
- Beginning Tuesday, November 24, 2009 - return to Uplink to complete two weekly vouchers, covering the time since the extension became law
- Beginning Wednesday, November 25, 2009 – deposits for eligible vouchers will be posted to individual debit cards.
- Each subsequent week – file your weekly voucher online similar to other unemployment programs.

A new scam has emerged in other states involving text messages that target the unemployed. The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) warns customers to be on the alert for bogus text messages claiming the department has canceled their benefit debit cards. DWD is not the originator of these messages nor has it authorized these messages. Unemployment insurance customers who receive text messages should not respond to them and, more importantly, should not provide any personal information.
New Federal Unemployment Extension Available in Indiana on November 23
The federal government has enacted another extension of unemployment benefits. The legislation will provide up to 20 weeks of additional benefits in Indiana. Hoosiers who have previously exhausted their unemployment benefits, but remain unemployed, will be able to apply for this extension beginning November 23 through Uplink.

New Educational Opportunities for Unemployed Workers - Americans with more education and training have more secure jobs and higher earnings. With jobs hard to find, it may be a good time to consider going back to school. The Federal Pell Grant program can provide up to $5,350 for educational costs at community colleges, colleges and universities, and many trade and technical schools. This is only one example of several federal student aid programs available to assist unemployed workers. Applying for financial aid and finding education and training are not difficult. Several changes to the unemployment insurance benefit system took effect on July 1, 2009 due to the passage of House Enrolled Act 1379. The change requires anyone collecting unemployment insurance benefits to apply for one job and look for work at two additional locations each week they seek to collect benefits, unless they qualify for a work-search waiver.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has announced that eligible Hoosiers who exhaust their state and federal unemployment benefits may be eligible for up to an additional 20 weeks of unemployment assistance. Those eligible for Indiana’s Extended Benefits will be notified by mail beginning this week.

Important notice regarding the temporary $25 weekly increase (which was part of the Economic Stimulus Legislation): This increased benefit amount applies to all eligible claimants collecting state or federal unemployment benefits. Claimants will receive two deposits with eligible weekly vouchers filed effective the week of 2/22/09 through the end of 2009. One deposit will include your weekly benefit amount. The United States Department of Labor has issued instructions for the recently enacted federal extended unemployment compensation program. Key highlights include:
- The original 13-week program, passed in July 2008, is now 20 weeks.
- The new program, approved in November 2008, offers 13 additional benefit weeks for Hoosiers. Claimants who have exhausted their 26 weeks of state unemployment and 20 weeks of federal extended unemployment benefits are now eligible for up to an additional 13 weeks of federal unemployment payments.
- Claimants will be able to file for the new federal benefits through the Uplink system on November 30th, 2008. (Uplink CSS). Payments for these claims, however, may not appear in claimant debit card accounts for up to five business days after initial filing.

The United States Congress and President Bush have approved a second federal extension of unemployment benefits to qualified individuals. The Department of Workforce Development will notify all potential claimants on the Uplink homepage about how to apply for the federal extension once details are available. Claimants can visit DWD's homepage at 5:00 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, November 26, for the latest information about the federal extension.
