State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database

SHAARD Quick Links

Access to all of the historic property (above ground) data eventually will be available on the web and open to the public. Currently, SHAARD includes data from the Indiana Cemetery Registry, on historic bridges, from properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and on historic theaters in Indiana. As funds become available, all the information from the Indiana Survey of Historic Sites and Structures files will be added to the database.

The archaeological data contained in SHAARD was collected from previously conducted cultural resource inventories, National Register listings, research projects, and cultural resource management project reports. As funds become available, all of the archaeological survey information in the division files will be entered into SHAARD. Access to archaeological site locations and detailed site information is restricted and password protected and will be granted to qualified individuals who meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards with a specialty in prehistoric, historic and/or underwater archaeology or geomorphology.

At this time, there is not a GIS component to SHAARD. The DHPA is currently digitizing site locations through different initiatives and hopes to have a GIS component of SHAARD available in the future.

SHAARD was made possible with financial support from the Federal Highway Administration, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Historic Preservation Fund of the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

Historic Preservation Fund Grant Priorities

Every year the DHPA revises the priorities by which Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grant applications are evaluated. The priorities are established within the parameters of the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund Grant Manual, and represent the types of projects that the DHPA view as important to its mission to identify, document, investigate, preserve, and interpret cultural resources in Indiana.

Applicants for grant assistance must provide responses to the categorical evaluation criteria AND the Administrative Priorities in their grant proposals. Both sets of evaluation criteria and the HPF grant program guidelines are being provided for public review and comment. Please provide any comments to the DHPA Grants Staff by Friday, July 17, 2009. All public comments received will be presented at the meeting of the State Historic Preservation Review Board on July 22, 2009.

All public comments must be received in writing. Send comments by fax to 317-232-0693, by e-mail to skennedy@dnr.IN.gov, or by mail to DHPA Grants Staff, 402 W. Washington St., Room W274, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

Administrative Priorities and HPF Program Guidelines are included with each set of the following Categorical Priorities.

Architectural and Historical Priorities

Archaeological Priorities

Acquisition and Development Priorities
