DHPA Staff
We have a professional staff of 21 members. Collectively, these staff members hold 45 degrees from 21 different institutes of higher learning from across the nation, and have more than 208 years of combined on-the-job experience.
Division Director
James A. Glass, Ph.D., Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, has been with the division since 2007. He graduated with a B.A. in History and Spanish from Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis), an M.A. in Latin American History from Indiana University, and M.A. in History of Urban Development from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Architectural History and Historic Preservation Planning, Cornell University. Before coming to the state, he served as Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at Ball State University and as the Director of the Center for Historic Preservation at Ball State University. He served as Director of the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology and Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer in the early 1990s. He has a long career in preservation and history.
Preservation Services
Frank D. Hurdis, Jr., Assistant Director of Preservation Services, has been with the division since 1985. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Architectural History and holds a M.A. in Architectural History and Preservation Planning from Cornell University. He also did doctoral work at Northwestern University. Frank is adjunct faculty in the Historic Preservation program at Ball State University where he teaches Midwest Architecture and Planning.
Paul C. Diebold, Team Leader of Survey and Registration, has been with the Ddivision since 1988. He graduated from Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis with a B.A. in Art History, and received a M.S. in Historic Preservation from Ball State University. Paul specializes in early 20th century domestic architecture, is an adjunct faculty member at Herron School of Art and Design.
Jeannie R. Regan-Dinius, Director of Special Initiatives, has worked for the division since 2000. She has an B.A. in Public History from Ball State University and an M.S. in both Urban Planning and Library Science Information Management from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
Holly A. Tate, Architectural Historian, has been with the division since January, 2007. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she earned a B.A. in history from Huntingdon College (Montgomery, Alabama). She is a candidate for a Master of Historic Preservation degree from the University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia). She worked at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division in the Survey and Register Unit from 1999 to 2006.
Amy E. Walker, Architectural Historian, has been with the division since 2001. Amy graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in American Studies and received her M.S. in Historic Preservation from Ball State University.
Environmental Reviews
Ryan Berger, Environmental Review Log In Coordinator, has been with the division since 2009. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a major in Political Science and Pre Law. He recently completed his Masters degree in Urban Planning with a concentration in Housing and Community Development from Ball State University.
Karie A. Brudis, Assistant Director of Environmental Review, has been with the division since 1999. She received her undergraduate degree in history with a certificate in historic preservation from Youngstown State University and a Master's degree in planning from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
Cathy A. Carson, Records Check Coordinator, has been with the division since 2007. She holds a B. A. in anthropology, with a concentration in archaeology and a minor in geology, from Indiana Univeristy-Purdue University Fort Wayne. She has also completed graduate level courses in archaeology, anthropology, and geology at Ball State University. Cathy has over 15 years of archaeological experience in Indiana. Most recently, she worked for over seven years at a Cultural Resource Management firm based in Indiana. Her research interests include Midwestern U.S. prehistory, lithics, chert studies, geoarchaeology, and public awareness of Indiana archaeology.
Archaeology
James R. Jones III, Ph.D., State Archaeologist and Team Leader of Archaeology, has been with the division since 1987 and has served as State Archaeologist since 1991. Dr. Jones received his B.A. in Anthropology and English from the University of New Mexico, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Indiana University. Dr. Jones has substantial experience in prehistoric and historical archaeology, and his research interests include historical cultures in Indiana.
Laura R. Black, Archaeologist, joined the division in 2007. She holds a B.A. and M.S. from Purdue University in Anthropology with a specialization in Historic Archaeology.
Cathy L. Draeger-Williams, Archaeologist, has been with the division since 2003. She holds an A.A. from Vincennes University, a B.A. in History and Anthropology from Ball State University, and a M.A. in Anthropology from Ball State University.
Amy L. Johnson, Senior Archaeologist and Archaeology Outreach Coordinator, has worked for the Division since 1991. She holds a B.S. and a M.A., both Anthropology, from Ball State University. Amy's main research interests are prehistoric archaeology (specifically the Adena and Hopewell periods), historic cemeteries, and public education regarding archaeological resources and cultural resources laws. Amy is Indiana’s state network coordinator for the Public Education Committee of the Society for American Archaeology.
Structures Review
John L. Carr, Team Leader of Historic Structures Review, has been with the division since 1987. He holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Vanderbilt University. He has also completed course work in Public History at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. John is a member of the Indiana Bar, and is a railroad history enthusiast.
Shawn Niemi, Historic Structures Reviewer, started with the division in May 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geological Sciences from Indiana University and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Ball State University
Chad Slider, Historic Structures Reviewer, joined the division in May 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI) and graduated from Ball State University with an M.S. in Historic Preservation. He has also served on numerous boards, including the Mattawan (MI) Downtown Development Authority and the Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission. Before relocating to Indiana, Chad owned a furniture upholstery and restoration business for twelve years, and also restored windows.
Ashley D. Thomas, Historic Structures Reviewer, has been with the division since May, 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and a Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation from Ball State University.
Miriam L. Widenhofer, Historic Structures Reviewer, has been with the division since 2004. She graduated from Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, WI) with a B.A. in History. She has also completed coursework in Public History at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and in Historic Preservation at Ball State University.
Administration, Financial Incentives and Planning
Steven D. Kennedy, Assistant Director of Administration, Financial Incentives and Planning has been with the division since 1996. Steve is a native of California, and received his B.A. in Art History from the University of California at Riverside. Steve received his M.S. in Historic Preservation from Ball State University.
David B. Duvall, Historical Architect and Tax Credit Administrator, has been with the division since 1998. David is a graduate of University of Cincinnati - College of Design Architecture and Art and is a registered architect in the State of Indiana. In addition to architectural practice with a focus on historic preservation, he has also served as Director of the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County.
Malia D. Vanaman, Associate Grants Manager, has been with the DHPA since March of 2000. She received her B.A. in U.S. History in 1995 from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, and worked for two years in the Advertising and Marketing office of Yankee Publishing, Inc. also in Boston. She received her Master’s in Public History from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in 2002, and wrote her thesis on history and film. She volunteers for the Indianapolis-based Heartland Film Festival, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Neighborhood Development Corporation which is dedicated to community revitalization and quality of life in the southeast side of Indianapolis.
